For our location shots, we decided to create a short film to show both pictures of the locations and some of the sample shots that we were thinking about using for our final piece. We have yet to add a voice over to add more detail and analysis of the areas, and some of the pictures are the wrong way round; and we will fix this as soon as we can.

Concept Presentation
To show our initial concept for out music video, we have created a presentation that shows each of the elements of the music video that we have planning, including; Editing, Camera work and Mise en Scene. This shows an introduction to our idea, as well as examples from other music videos and/or artists.
Below is the Prezi that we made for the presentation:

Our Audience
This post is to explore in more depth our type of audience for our artist and what is going to be appealing to the audience. By answering these questions we have understood and researched the information we need to progress for our music video.
who are the specific audiences for particular products?

How do media industries target those audiences?
What do the audiences consume?

Lyrics Annotation
Through analysing and researching the lyrics, we were able to relate the lyrics to our concept further as we realised that the song is widely focusing on the comforts of 'home' and then losing this. The deeper meaning to the lyrics is also quite conventional for our genre, as many indie songs will follow more meaningful meanings and plots, making our song more relatable for the genre. Furthermore, there is a lot of reference to religion, which we have chosen to be a larger focus in our music video as it links with our chosen concept, and will help the video suit the lyrics better.
Test Shot: Tracking Shot Of Feet Walking
For our test shot, we wanted to try and create a tracking shot of Layla's feet walking, as this is a shot that we are interested in using in our music video. We were not able to use the correct equipment due to availability and time, so as a result, this shot is unstable. To develop this more, we will do another test shot using the necessary equipment.

Mise-en-scene; Costume
The look that we are looking for is an artist that is very fashionable and hipster. The clothing that she would be wearing a skater skirt, with a nice colored shirt with a big and bold necklace with a baggy cardigan, they would also be wearing heeled boots,Chelsea boots,and flats.
This particular style is very 'urban', which relates to her personality of laid back, cool and expressing her self. Having this particular fashion sense, also relates to the target audience of teenagers to young adults, as this is what they would be wearing, but also wearing these clothes can also encourage them to create this style for themselves, and she could also be a 'fashion idol' to them.

However, to differentiate her from the general and basic look that is popular currently, we will include some other pieces that may take on a new style for her - which will hep her to stand out.
This helps to also show the laid back attitude that she has, with the other outfits are helping to portray. This will match the simple arrangements of the beat as well as the tempo, which will be both pleasing for the audience and make her appear as more suited to the song.

Development process for choosing our genre
When we were planning our genre, we discussed many different genres, below is an example of this;
After researching into the genres and viewing the different conventions that each one usually requires, we decided to focus on a sub-genre of Indie: Indie Pop. We chose this genre as we all enjoy this type of music and our widely aware of the conventions. Furthermore, we think that this genre gives us more ability to creatively shoot the video with a slower pace of editing and more unconventional shots and framing as this is more interesting to create, and watch. We also initally liked the idea of shooting in an urban environment, which this genre fits perfectly with as many of the songs focus in on more urban settings and plots, and as we live close to central London we will have easy accessibility to very urbanised areas. As our group consists of girls, we are going to choose a female vocalist as this will allow maximum flexibility for filming.
This is an example of this genre;

The conventions of Indie Pop
8 Conventions of Indie POP
1. This is the first convention. I've noticed that female artists within this genre have there face almost bare apart from dark eyebrows and dark lipstick. This is the style they are trying to achieve or purely their style.
2. This is also present in this genre as I've seen different locations and narratives in their music videos.
3. Close ups to extreme close ups of the artists face. This is present in a lot of single artist music videos.
4. Tracking shots are used a lot in this genre also when the artist or artists are moving around.

7. Not only is close ups used of the artist in this genre they really play with showing the different angles of the artists face and body to how different dimension.
8. Female artists, which are the sub genre type we ware exploring more they make eye contact with the camera. This may be due to the story line or narrative being told it makes the auidnece feel more involved as if they are being directly spoke to.

Our Chosen Artist and Song: Meg Mac Grandmas Hands
When choosing the artist we all initially had a strong interest for the Indie genre, as this is something we all listen to and feel that it can create interesting ideas for our music video. When choosing the final song, we compared a range of different artists from all sub-genres such as Indie Rock, Indie Pop, Indie Acoustic etc.
In the end, we decided to focus on the Indie Pop sub-genre as we felt that we can use the beats in the music to create interesting ideas and not limit ourselves to acoustic instruments and voices.
We chose Meg Mac as we liked the alternative sound with the electronic instruments and 'soul' voice as we feel that we can use this alternative appeal in our video with the plot/editing/mise en scene/camera shots.
As the lyrics of the song are quite ambiguous, this allows us to create our own plot/theme for the video instead of closely following already created plots - which we wanted to have as this gives us freedom to push ourselves and create interesting results.
Genre Analysis: Lorde - Royals
This is my chosen genre analysis. I chose Lorde as she is widely known for bringing the indie pop sound into modern music. Additionally, her urban look and chosen setting is similar to what we are planning to create for our music video, as it is relatable for the target audience and is typical for the indie genre.
Genre Analysis 2: Banks - Drowning
This is my analysis of Banks - Drowning. I chose this artist as she has a similar image to what we are creating for our music video as she follows the same indie genre. However, her music is much more indie/rock than we are aiming for as it has darker themes, but still follows similar themes that we are going for in our concept.
Low Budget Music Video Analysis's
As we are only creating a smaller scale project for our music video, we will not be able to use high cost equipment/settings/props etc. as we will be working to the schools equipment and our budgets. I have analysed two low budget videos from another school in order to see how I can work around this in my group, and analyse the impact this may make.
1 - A Pop Boy-band Music Video
2 - A more unconventional music video (Rock/Pop/House)
Low budget videos can work as long as the camera work and editing is of a higher standard and any props/costumes look professional and relate to the genre. Additionally, clever use of lighting can create a more professional looking setting and video, for example in the first analysing the group have lights behind them to emphasise the performance strand. For my video, I will take on this information to ensure that it still looks professional and well made, even at a smaller budget.
Carol Vernallis
Carol Vernallis
'The Kindest Cut'
For Vernallis' theory, she analysed music videos and Hollywood films to compare the different techniques in editing and general approaches to creating the videos/films. The overall conclusion reached was music videos follow a much more unconventional way of editing and approaches to their plot/strands/narrative and etc. Whereas the Hollywood movies all followed conventional and chronological ways of editing and ordering shots in conjunction with the plot.
1. Music videos follow a number of different plot 'strands', and often leave these incomplete.
Contrasting from a films chronological way to show only one main plot, music videos tend to show a range of different strands with different settings/people/colours or showing the artist in a new costume, area, or shot. This allows the artist to be shown in a number of settings, which can, in turn, portray them in new and interesting ways, such as shown below;
In this example from Ariana Grande ft Iggy Azalea - Problem, the different range of strands (close up, extra dancer, the guest artist, and the artist singing and dancing with the extras) helps to make the video look more fun and energetic as there is a lot of movement and different strands to follow going on at a fast pace. During the first few seconds of the video, the different strands have allowed the audience to see the artist, guest artist, and the dancers - and this will help to set the mood for the video and show the audience what they should be expecting.
2. Music videos have an unconventional order of shots
In a Hollywood movie, there is always a very conventional and chronological way of ordering the shots as this allows the audience to see and understand the narrative, setting and characters. This includes shots such as establishing shots for each new setting, and the general flow of a film (beginning/introduction, middle/climax, end/resolution). In a music videos, they use a much less conventional way of creation and editing as they do not include this 'typical' order that films follow. Instead, the video cross cuts through different strands, places and times.
As shown in the example, there is no chronological order of place or time as the shots jump from fields/water/sky/long shot/close up/fire, this helps to create the mood for her video, and adds quite a mysterious build up for the rest of her song.
Non-conventional view and portrayal of time, space, character and narrative
Whilst watching a film, we would expect to be able to see and understand all aspects of the plot as this helps us to understand the main, and only narrative for the film. For music videos, there are a mixture of different narratives which jump from areas, times and characters without introduction. This makes the audience have to work it out for themselves, sometimes, such as in the example shown below, the jumps in time and character begin to hint the narrative and theme of the song to the audiences;

This makes the audience have to work it out for themselves, sometimes, such as in the example shown below, the jumps in time and character begin to hint the narrative and theme of the song to the audiences;
In the example above, from Ella Henderson - Ghost, this technique is
used to show a range of different times and emotions as we see; shots of
the artist singing, who (we assume) the artist is singing about, and
the theme of the song as we then see (the same guy or the artist and the
guy) together in what appears to be the past. Similar to the first analysis, there are different strands to show different settings and times, however there is no clear definition between times and the video jumps from one to another at a relatively fast pace.
Discontinuity shots (such as montage editing)
Unlike Hollywood films which will follow the conventional continuity editing in order to keep the plot clear and simple for the audiences to understand. It is extremely popular, and conventional, for music videos to use techniques such as montage editing and cross cutting to 'jumble' up the order of the shots in order to show many of the different strands and plots the video might be showing.

In the example above, the discontinuity editing has helped to create the sense of panic, lack of control and knowledge of time/place. This helps the audience to understand the song, as it emphasises how she is feeling with being drunk/high and almost makes the audience empathise this as they begin to feel as confused as she is.
Visual hooks
Visual hooks are where non continual shots are linked by a single feature
Sometimes all elements are the same, and sometimes one is more dominant/they are different

In the example shown above, there is a main plot (which is the artist singing and the plot that revolves around her) however there are a mixture of different shots and elements with new colours, animations and video styles.

Theory 1. Illustration
Illustration is the most basic yet vastly used technique for music videos, this means that the pictures seen during the song link directly to the lyrics in a very straight forward and literal way. This is usual for many modern songs as they usually contain plots that the artists what to present, some almost like short films. An example of this is 'Stay High', this is illustration as we are seeing exactly what she is singing about, there is no hidden meaning.
Another factor for illustration videos is that they will always cut on the beat to create smooth transitions and this also helps to make the video seem more professional and well made. In addition to this, the band is usually shot singing/dancing or playing the instruments that feature in the song. In general, this is a very typical format for music videos, especially pop.
Below is an example of the pictures being similar to the lyrics and the on beat cuts - as you can see in the example below;
Theory 2. Amplification
For this theory, the main factor of it is that the video 'amplifies' what the lyrics are saying. This can be in a literal way to exaggerate the lyrics and show the theme/mood of the song. As you can see below, the pictures that we are seeing directly link to what she is singing about, which helps the audience to understand the plot of the lyrics or it can be in a less literal way, in order to show the audience a new meaning or theme to the song that may of not been as obvious whilst listening to the song, intriguing the audience and giving them a deeper understand such as;
In addition to this, videos which follow this structure will usually cut on the beat, however this will not be as controlled as illustration. This allows more freedom and can create interesting contrasts to the music, but as most of the cuts are on beat; it still keeps the video in sync with the beat of the song. Also, the band (or artist) will take on fictional roles to 'play a part' in the narrative of the song, which helps to amplify the plot even further and keeps the attention on the artists. As you can see below, the shots are still in time with the music, however do not always cut directly on the beat.
Theory 3. Disjuncture
Disjuncture is generally the rarer theory for music videos to follow, as it is a risky move and if carried out, it is by professional and well known bands / artists. The main idea of this is that the pictures don't relate to the lyrics or even the theme of the song, what we see does not correlate at all. The beats are all off cut, almost like a different video with the song in the background. This is used mostly in dance tracks as they do not necessarily have any main plots, such as;
In this example, the only correlation between the song and the video is that he is playing it through speakers, and we understand this more when we see shots through glass as the sound becomes muffled. The cuts are not in sync with the beat, which separates sound to picture very clearly, this can help to emphasise the plot of the video or to make the viewer see the song in a new light. Additionally, the band/artist take on a completely new role to what they would have been expected to do, in general, Disjuncture videos go against any of the general conventions for music videos.
As you can see in the example above and below, the band members have all taken new 'identities' as such, by being in the elephant costumes. This is generally unconventional for music videos as a huge part of them is introducing the artists and showing them singing. The beats are also (mostly) off the beat, however it could also be argued that this is a Amplification video as the video almost correlates with what the song is saying.

1. Illustrations
This is when the way that the shots have been edited are always cut to the music, the use of this means that the transition between shots is smooth and flowing and adds to the effect of what meaning and feeling are trying to be portrayed.
Another factor of illustration is that the images that are illustrated are the literal meaning or feeling of the song lyrics. This typical feature is in many music video, to show the plot and story the song is about. An example of this is; Love story by Taylor Swift.
This particular points also incorporates that the singer/ band will be dancing, or playing an instrument. They would also be dressed in the appropriate costume to enhances the meaning and characteristic of the plot of the video.
2. Amplification
This is when the band takes fictional characters in the narrative of the song, this is used when images used in the video amplify the images, this is when the video has a specific narrative and tend to not get picked up when reading the lyrics. An example of this is; Free by rudimental.
3. Disjuncture
This is when the images that are shown do not relate to the lyrics, this is sometimes used by bands that are well established and therefore are able to take the risk. Also the band/ singer will take an image that is nothing or is opposite of what is expected of the image.
Further more the cuts of the videos are sometimes of the beat. An example of this is; Kiesza- Hideaway

Carol Vernallis
Carol Vernallis ; The kindest cut
Carol Vernallis theory is when analysed both music video and Hollywood films and then compared them, by looking at the way they used the editing, camerawork, narrative etc. What Carol Vernallis conclusion came to was that the way music video used editing, narrative, camera work etc. was very different and unconventional compared to the way that Hollywood films were made.
When looking at music video and Hollywood films, she came to the conclusion that;
1. Music videos had lots strands of pathways
When looking at music videos they manly have more 'incomplete' pathways when it comes to the narrative, this is because music video ten to show different settings and costumes therefore meaning they are complete, however they do relate to each other in some way. Whereas in Hollywood films they ten to have just one pathways which followed through the whole time.
2.Don't have a particular order in the shots
In music videos they tend to have lots of different types of camera shots and angles of the singer/ bands in different setting etc. Therefore the way they are ordered are unconventional as they don't have to be in a specific way, however in Hollywood films they are conventional as they all have very similar camera shots, they also have the certain shots that really portray they narrative which not always the case with music videos. For example in Hollywood films every time a new characters is introduced, they would have a close up or mid of them.
3.Unclear portrayal of characters, the narrative and the time era
In music videos, the characters tend to be the singers and don't have a distinctive character that really contributes to the narrative. In addition the narrative of the video may also be unclear due to the different locations that are shown in different shots. However in films the setting and character all contribute to the narrative to make it clear to the audience with what's going on.
4.Discontinuity shots
In films they use continuity editing, which is make the film a lot clearer for the audience to understand and also easier for the audience to stay focus on the narrative, however in music video the editing used is discontinuity, which is conventional for music videos. In music videos they use cross cutting and montage for example, which changes the order of the shots and jumbles them up . doing this shows the different narratives in the music video.
5. All the elements which are colour, lighting, stars are all equal, however in some circumstances one particular element may be more dominant.
Lastly in music videos some elements are equal or sometime one may be more dominate, it depends on the music video and also what they want to show in the narrative and which element would really portray this.
Carol also said " Shots of artists will encourage us to piece together a phantasmagorical body. ( Which means that a body is made up in our mind, by piece together all the shots that have been shown to us) An example of this is: Rihanna; Where Have You Been.

Montage editing; This can be seen in a variety of different music video, and is very much a conventional method of editing, as it makes the video a lot more interesting as it adds variety to the other shots types that are already present in the video.

Red Hot Chili Peppers- Can't stop
Camera Work
At the start of the music video it starts off with a tracking shot, through the tube. Doing this is a creative way to start to video but it also create suspense as you don't know what at the end.
It the goes onto the conventional shots like the close up of the main singers, medium shots of the band members with their instruments and a song shot, to show that they are one and the main attraction.
Compared to other styles of music, rock mainly doesn't have shots of other people, like back up dancers as they like to have the audience focus on their band.
Editing
The only editing they had was the face pace, due to the tempo of the music, but they also have slow motion, which has been used on many shots, when they have done jumps, or flipped their hair.
Mise-en-scene
The location that the video was filmed in, was like a warehouse that has a orange back board, however it was filmed in different parts, like in a corridor. The lighting the was used is mainly high key, as they are not trying to tell to create a certain atmosphere for a character. However there is a section where the lighting is low key, to help enhance the coloured lighting on the ceiling. The costumes that the band is wearing is mainly casual clothing like jeans and a top, however two band members are bare chested, showing of their muscles and tattoos, this is to show their dominance, also having a bare chest is a conventional thing in rock. Finally in the video they use a lot of props, like a tube, buckets, bottle, chairs etc.. this bring humour to the video and also make it fun to watch.

Camera work
The camera work used in this video, are the conventional shots like the close up, extreme close ups. This allows that audience to be aware of who the main focus of the music video is.
Also in this video, as the very beginning it starts with a pull focus on the singer, this shows how the moment that she is in full focus, she's very important and also shows that the song has started.
At the very beginning as well, there is a long shot of the location which is a beach. This is another conventional shot used in pop music videos. By allowing the audience to see the location is lets them try to have an understanding what the song is about and also have an opinion in whether its a good place to really show the meaning of the lyrics. Also this particular shots is at a slight high angle, this is to really show how large and also capture the beauty of the beach.
As the music video goes on there are long shots and mid shots of the dancers. The use of these allows the audience to see the whole moves and then get closer to see the details, like the costumes as well as the facial expressions.

Editing
The pace of the editing was fast, but as the song progressed the pace got quicker, once the music got louder and a lot quicker, this then reflect how many shots was shown, which made the atmosphere of the video exciting, and very party like.
Also in certain parts the shots have been put into slow motion and other parts have been sped up. For example;
This section has been sped up;
And this small section has been slowed down;
Mise en scene
The location of the video is shown at the very beginning which is a beach, which is the location throughout, however the video is shown in lots of different parts of the beach, to show how big and naturally beautiful it is, which reflects the song of 'Love'. Therefore having this particular location could represent 'Love' in all forms, which is 'Beautiful'.
The costumes that was used on the artists were normal beach wear of short and a top and bikinis, however towards the end of the video the costumes changed to a more glamorous and party like clothing, as it was bright and summery.
Also the costumes of the dancers, reflect the type of dancing that they are doing. For example the street dancer, has casual wear of jeans, t-shirt and trainers, where as the contemporary dancers are wearing, for the male, wearing tight jogging bottoms, and the woman is wearing a dress that flows with her movements. The use of the dancers is to show the song but through movements.
Finally the lighting, the lighting used in this music video is mostly natural when it has been filmed during the day, then once it gets to the evening shots, the lighting was very low key to show the party atmosphere and also emphasise the lighting from the fire eaters and fire breathers and the candles.
Genre music video analysis: The lumineers
The lumineers- Ho Hey
Theories: Carol vernallis
Carol Vernallis- The kindest cut
- Vernallis analyzed editing in music videos and in Hollywood film.- Vernallis identified exact specific approaches to each video and film.
Music videos:
- Lots of different narrative strand/ paths are used in a music video showed by the performance.This is different in a Hollywood film there is a clear single strand.
- the order of shots are unconventional, a shift that is more free between shots. Absence of a proper order of shots. This is different in a Hollywood film where there would be an order that is conventionally always followed for example: an establishing shot for the opening of the film.
- Time, space character and the narrative are revealed slowly throughout the video instead of a definite knowing of all those things prior to watching it. however this is different in a Hollywood film where the audience would already know the time period and the characters present.
- Discontinuity, meaning for example pop videos draw the audience away from the narrative to base it on other structures. Continuity is used in films to draw the audience to the actual narrative which is the main aspect.
- Visual hooks are present in music videos and this creates continuity, however non continuous shots that are linked by a single feature/image.
Radioactive- Imagine Dragons: In this video it is clear that the order of shot is unconventional. The video starts with a high angled shot that shows a long long shot of a person walking towards the audience. This is the opening of the video and did not give us an establishing shot towards the audience where this video is set neither was there any indication of a time set. We then say the characters face wearing the blue hoodie, however theres still no indication of who she is or who she represents. Also the content of the box is a mystery until the end of the video.
Theory: Shots of artist within a music video will encourage the audience to piece together the image of the artist, this is called a phantasmagorical body ( a body made up in our mind from various shots given).
Rihanna- Diamonds: In this clip this theory is present due to the Phantasmagorical body i had whilst watching the first minute of this music video. It begins showing mainly her fingers, showing us the audience that she is more of an adult artist due to her fake nails. then it progressed to a shot of her hand to her elbow in water. then we partly saw the female artists face in low key lighting, however her shoulder was more lit up showing her tattoo. This is an example of this theory as we saw features of the artist body before we saw a long shot/ full body of shot, showing exactly what the artist looked like.
Theories: Andrew Goodwin
Andrew Goodwin: Illustration, Amplification and Disjuncture
Illustration: in an illustration music video it always cuts on the beat. The lyrics always have a literal meaning of feeling that is clear in the music video. Also the band area and the way they dress are as expected due to the meaning.
Rebecca Black- Friday
- This music video is Illustration due to the literal meaning. This music video is about a girl going out to a part on Friday because that the break up of the weekend. Also they are dressed casually as if they were getting on with their everyday.
Disjuncture: In a Disjuncture music video the film cuts off the beat, which could look like a badly made music video if not done correctly. The images shown within the music video doesn't relate to the lyrics. Also the band image: The band take on an image that is nothing like or the complete opposite of their expected image.
Da Funk- Daft Punk
- This music video resembles the type of a disjuncture music video. The images shown within this video were completely non related to the song and the music. This is clear because of the talking dog carrying the radio throughout the whole video.
Skrillex- Bangarang
- This music video is a disjuncture video because the video has no relevance to the meaning of the lyrics and the meaning of the song. In the video there's a driver eating an ice-cream and he had a thick black mustache, chasing after a few of these teenage boys.
Amplification: In an amplification music video the film cuts on the beat but also off the beat which could emphasise the features. The images shown throughout the video amplifies the lyrics and also the band takes on a fictional role in a narrative.
Mr. Probz Waves (Robin Schulz Remix Radio Edit)
- This is an amplification video which means the performance and images shown in this video amplified the meaning of the lyrics and the band almost takes on a fictional role as shown in this video. This is about a person having a good life with this woman and slowly he loses her but in the video it cuts between the past and the present. In the present he is on a beach stranded almost drifting away like the lyrics suggest. He is looking back on the past which is what it cuts to. This exaggerates the meaning of the lyrics.
Katy Perry- Dark Horse
- This video is an example of Amplification. This is shown by the fictional character Katy Perry takes on. She is singing about an Egyptian queen called Cleopatra that was a powerful woman. In this video she is resembling her an singing about her powers and not to fall her because she will control anyone using her powers. This is clear throughout the music video where she uses her powers and her costume and setting was as expected in Egypt in ferro times.
